A trip that is guaranteed to be a memorable and cherished holiday, is visiting Zermatt for Christmas.
Just upon first sight, Zermatt looks like pure wintery perfection – like something from straight out of a snow globe!
Whether going as a family, couple, or group of friends, Zermatt has everything you need to spend an unforgettable Christmas. Here is how to plan the perfect Zermatt Christmas trip!
About Zermatt Village
Zermatt is most well-known as a mountaineering village and ski resort. The non-adventure sports folks will likely come to Zermatt to marvel at the beauty that is the Matterhorn, easily the most iconic mountain peak in the world.
Zermatt History
Up until the 1800s, Zermatt was largely an agricultural village. Before it saw its boom, it was sparsely populated by just a few farmers and their cows, and little else.
When the Matterhorn became the last mountain in the Alps to be conquered in 1865, it instantly rose to infamy. What turned out to be a disastrous expedition, inherently placed the Matterhorn on the center of the map for alpinism, and consequently Zermatt as well, as its jumping point.
Things to Know Before You Go
Zermatt is a unique village located in a somewhat remote corner of Switzerland. Given its uniqueness, there are some key things to know when planning your Zermatt Christmas.
There is No Car Traffic
Zermatt is a car-free village, meaning you won’t find any car traffic in the village itself.
The reason for this, is to retain the integrity of Zermatt as a village. Although its popularity and visitor numbers have now reached astronomical heights, locals still fight to keep it from losing its village essence.
The lack of motor vehicles makes it very safe for pedestrians, as you’ll be totally free to walk on the streets freely.
It also means less noisy streets, less air pollution, and keeping the village open and airy instead of jam-packed with parked cars.
As a car-free village, you’ll find that you can’t drive to Zermatt nor park within the village itself.
There is No Parking
If you will be coming by car, you will likely have to park in Täsch, a nearby village about 12 minutes away from Zermatt by train.
The parking location is called Parking Bahnhof Täsch, and you’ll need to pay a daily fee to park your car here.
Luckily the parking is very secure; I parked here with no issues for 4 days. Be sure to bring all items you’ll need for your trip, as to not have to make the short (but annoying) 12 minute train journey back here from Zermatt.
Book in Advance
At the peak of the season, Zermatt gets up to 35,000 visitors at a time. Planning for Zermatt in Christmas definitely lines up with a busy period, so in order to secure the accommodation you want, plan ahead.
I’d suggest booking your hotel in autumn, or even at the end of the summer to grab good deals. As for tours, train tickets, and lift tickets, those can wait.
Bring Swiss Francs
Most things in Zermatt can be paid for with credit card. But there were a few cases where I was prompted to pay in cash and had none.
There are ATMs in town but if you are further up the mountain, like having lunch in a mountain hut, you may not have access to an ATM. Bring some cash to avoid any issues.
Remember, Switzerland is not on the Euro, and you’ll need to take out Swiss Francs.
The Costs in Zermatt
Zermatt is not a budget destination at any time of year. As a world-famous ski town, commonly frequented by the rich and famous, this is definitely a destination that counts as a splurge.
And since Zermatt for Christmas is a popular concept among visitors, the costs will be even higher during this time.
Again, booking accommodation early enough is key in grabbing a good deal. For budget travelers there are hostels, but these fill up fast too, so book ahead!
If you’d like to visit a ski village in Switzerland for Christmas, but at slightly cheaper prices, check out Grindelwald instead!

Weather in Zermatt During Christmas
The best thing about choosing Zermatt for Christmas is the guaranteed snow on Christmas Day! So if it’s a white Christmas you’re after, you will not be disappointed.
December marks the first month of the winter season, which typical kicks off the sub-zero temperatures in Zermatt.
Typically, the temperature falls between -3 degrees Celsius to -12 degree Celsius. December also sees an average of 12 days of actual snowfall, so you’ll likely have fresh snow for frolicking in during your trip.
Where to Stay
Zermatt offers a wide range of accommodation offerings. From the classic wooden mountain chalets, to grand luxury hotels, to hostels, here are some options for all budgets.
Beausite Zermatt: This 4 star hotel is my top pick for your Zermatt Christmas vacation. It features the best spa in town, which includes one indoor spa, and an outdoor spa, with the best views of the Matterhorn. Also includes saunas as part of the wellness center. Entry for the spa itself is 80 CHF, but is free for hotel guests.
Wellness Hotel Alpenhof: Another amazing hotel including its own wellness center. It doesn’t have the best view, but the spa is probably the best in town. Plus, it’s a convenient five minute walk away from the Gornergrat Railway.
Zermatt Youth Hostel: This is the only budget/backpacker option available in town, where you can save money by choosing a dorm bed. This option is ideal for solo travelers.
How to Get to Zermatt
Zermatt is located in the southwestern canton of Valais. The closest major airport is in Geneva, about 3 hours away. From there (or anywhere in Switzerland really), you have 2 options on getting to Zermatt.
Zermatt by Car
You’ll want to set your GPS destination to Täsch, the nearest village to Zermatt in which parking is available.
Luckily, there are no toll fees in Switzerland, but you will need to purchase a Vingette sticker prior to your trip if you are taking your own vehicle. It costs 40 CHF, and can be purchased at any customs stall when entering the country.
If you are renting a car, it will already come with this sticker, but it doesn’t hurt to ask beforehand.
Parking in Täsch
Upon arriving in Täsch, you will head to Parking Bahnhof Täsch. Here, it is 16 CHF per day for parking.
From the parking garage, walk to the Täsch Station, and take the train one stop to arrive in Zermatt.
Zermatt by Train
If you are heading to Zermatt sans car, you’ll be glad to know it is very much accessible by public transportation. Depending where your starting point is, it may just take several connections and a day spent on the train.
It you are starting in Geneva, it’s only about 3.5 hours to reach Zermatt, with one transfer in Visp.
Swiss Half Fare Card
If you plan to travel in Switzerland primarily by train, I would advise you to look into the Swiss Half Fare Card. It costs $134, but you’ll get all train tickets at a 50% reduction for a full month.
Once you realize how expensive Swiss train rides are, you’ll see why this quickly pays for itself and saves you a ton of money.
How to Book Trains
I always use Trainline for booking trains in Europe. They compare train and bus prices, so you can choose the time and route with the best deals.
While it’s not always necessary to book ahead, during Christmas, I wouldn’t take any chances. Book your ticket ahead to ensure seats.
Things to Do in Zermatt for Christmas
Zermatt during Christmas is nothing short of a wintery fairytale setting. While here, you have plenty of options for activities whether traveling as a family, couple or friends.
Christmas Ski Session
Most people know Zermatt as a ski resort, and for good reason. So if that’s your sport, chances are that’s why you chose Zermatt for Christmas to begin with.
There are three mountain areas to choose from: Sunnegga, Gornergrat and the Schwarzsee-Klein Matterhorn.
Sunnegga offers the most family friendly options, and with the most spectacular close up views of the Matterhorn. Shwarzsee-Klein is the highest ski area with the most pristine snow year round, and is home to Matterhorn Paradise ski resort, Europe’s longest ski run.
Ride the Cogwheel Train
Even if you don’t ski, you have plenty of options for getting into the mountains. There are numerous lifts and trains that will take you into the various resorts and villages.
However, the best options would be to take the Gornergrat Cogwheel Train up to Gornergrat itself. This train was built in 1898, and is steeped in the history of Zermatt – literally!
The train starts in Zermatt, and takes about 35 minutes to reach the Gornergrat viewing platform, 3100 meters above sea level.
The entire ride is perhaps one of the most scenic train rides you’ll ever take, and the reward at the top is sweeping views of the Matterhorn and surrounding mountains.
Hiking or Snowshoeing
You may be surprised to hear that hiking is still possible in winter. Of course, this is true if the weather cooperates and you have proper winter hiking boots!
Another alternative is to rent snowshoes and go with a guided tour. This is a great way to get out in the snow and see the mountains for non-skiers. Snowshoeing routes begin at Gornergrat and offer panoramic views of the mountain all around.
Dogsledding with a View
Another fun way to spend time in the snow is husky-sledding. This activity is offered at some of the ski resorts at the higher locations.
Imagine yourself sledding with some very fluffy and friendly huskies, while enjoying stunning views of the Matterhorn. After sledding, you are free to pet the dogs too (honestly the best part!!).

Eat Raclette & Swiss Specialties
Raclette is a wintertime favorite in Switzerland. After a great day spent outside in the snow, it’s a must!
You be able to find raclette in many restaurants around the village. Some near the train station are Cheese Factory and Pöstli Stübli.
Other notable Swiss favorites to try are fondue and spaetzle.
Check Out the Alpine Museum
A great way to spend some time indoors is by visiting the alpine museum. This museum gives an excellent insight into the very exciting history of Zermatt.
Here you’ll find replicas showing how Zermatt used to look back when it was a farming village.
You’ll also learn all the details regarding the historical alpinist expeditions that took place around here, including the infamous maiden summit of the Matterhorn.
Relax at a Wellness Center
After a successful day in the mountains, nothing beats relaxing at a spa. Many hotels in Zermatt will have their own spas accessible to guests. If your hotel doesn’t have one, you can always pay for a day pass to enjoy a spa at a neighboring hotel.
One of the best spas is at the Parkhotel Beau Site, which offers both indoor and indoor hot pools. The outdoor one offers amazing views of the Matterhorn.
Entry into a spa can range anywhere from 50 CHF – 100 CHF for a day pass. If you are staying at one of these hotels, entry is usually free.
Book a Helicopter Ride
If you are ballin’ out of control or just really in the mood to splurge, there is probably no greater way to marvel at the beauty of nature than from the sky via helicopter.
As long as you have good weather conditions during your stay, you absolutely can book a helicopter tour in Zermatt for Christmas.
An obvious and popular option is to book a tour to see the Matterhorn from above. It’s a way of seeing the mountains that few can say they’ve experienced, a true bucket list experience!
