Sardinia is a place that I knew little about, until my friend invited me to come visit his home on this Mediterranean island. A quick google search showed me pictures of crystal clear blue beaches, to which I said, why not? But is that all there is to Sardinia? Besides beaches, is Sardinia worth visiting?
After spending a week here, I can report back that it is absolutely worth a visit! Here are 6 reasons you need to visit Sardinia now!
The Food

If I had to pick my favorite thing about Sardinia, it has to be the food. Similar to the Italians (hint, they consider themselves non-Italian), Sardinians take extreme pride and care in the way they cook. The entire food experience here is truly art, from the preparation to the eating, with a big emphasis on the eating part.
Since this is an island, you can expect fresh, quality seafood that is simply cooked, but made to perfection. The local cheese and meats are also delicious and pair well with local wines.
Honestly, I didn’t have a single bad meal here. In fact every dish was insanely good. Just the chance to eat your way through the island makes Sardinia worth visiting.
No Crowds

It’s hard to believe a destination with beaches this stunning has somehow avoided overtourism. If it were the same beaches in Thailand, it would be destroyed by backpackers by now.
However, Sardinia has managed to keep their gems somewhat a secret. Most of the time, I only encountered locals and Italians in any city or beach. It’s hard to imagine that when right over on the mainland of Italy, cities like Rome or Venice are vastly overcrowded.
For authenticity and less crowds, Sardinia is the perfect destination.
The Wine
Of course, we can’t talk about food and skimp over alcohol. And we all know Italy is well known for its world famous wine regions. But Sardinia? They produce their own wine, too. In fact, most of the wine you will find on this island is locally produced.
The wine here has a unique taste due to the type of soil the grapes are grown in. While here you should drink plenty of Cannonau (red wine) and Vermentino (white wine). It would be hard to miss as both are found all over the island, and very reasonably priced for the quality.
The Beaches

Even if you spend your whole time in Sardinia beach hopping, you won’t have a bad time. The beaches here are world class, with that ultra crystal blue water you see in postcards. It’s really that blue in real life!
Here you’ll find beaches with soft, powdery white sand, but also beaches with rocky cliffs and caves to explore. Best of all, most of these beaches will never be overcrowded. And those sunsets are to die for.
Some of my favorite beaches are Spaggia di Porto Guinco (there are flamingos here!) and Spaggia Maimoni.
The Hiking
Sardinia is covered in mountains all throughout the island. The rugged landscape makes for many great hiking opportunities.
For an easy oceanside hike head to Capo Caccia, which will take you along the cliffs on the coast near Alghero. You’ll find caves and stunning views of the cliffs and sea below.
For more a mountainous hiking experiences, try the Monte Arcuentu trail, a pilgrimage trail which leads you through volcanic landscapes up to the peak of Monet Arcuentu itself.
Another option is to visit the Grand Canyon of Europe. Head to Gola di Gorropu, a huge canyon featuring dramatic landscapes and historic ruins . Here you have plenty of trails to choose from.
Cute Towns

There are many cute towns and narrow alleyways to get lost in. Bosa is a super colorful and photogenic town. Alghero has an interesting historic city center with old Catalonian architecture right on the waterfront. Castelsardo boasts a fortified castle on a hilltop with a vibrant village just below. The best part? All of these places are just a stones throw or right in front of the sea.
So to answer the question, is Sardinia worth visiting? The answer is a resounding yes, and you now have 6 reasons why. Go and experience this slice of heaven for yourself!
Have you been to Sardinia? Where should I go on my next visit?
